one of the few tracks in my library that I could play on endless repeat.

so after much deliberation i’ve decided i should probably make use of that lil ol’ piece of paper some of us call a diploma. i mean shit, it only cost me a cool $60,000. i have always loved animation but it took some real soul searching at the start of the year to get my mind in the game and rekindle the old flame.

at first i dove head first right back into maya, but after tinkering for a few weeks i decided to go way back to the fundamentals: drawing! i drew the most in college mostly because we had to for specific assignments, and even then i didn’t draw every day. for the past two months i’ve been drawing every day, varying from life drawing, to random sketching, to lessons in cartooning and drawing in general.

i’m starting over by trying to become more confident in my drawing. when i was in college, every now and again i would draw something that i would be immensely proud of. i loved that feeling! so much so that i want it to happen more often, and it’ll only happen by drawing a crapload of poop. i’ll be posting whatever random crap i happen to draw each day whether it’s amazing or shitty. i’m sure some day it’ll be nice to look back on my progress and laugh at my terrible drawings.

as far as animation goes, my degree really focused on 3d animation. i loved it at first simply because of all the crazy things you can do with it, but the more research i’ve been doing, namely reading john k’s blog (creator of ren & stimpy), i’ve been falling in love with traditional animation all over again (a few of my favs pictured above). i still love 3d of course, but at the present i’m planning on focusing on traditional animation to get the principles down, which may transfer to a 3d setting in the future.

after hours of blood and sweat i’ve configured my desktop just the way i wanted. went through tons of different styles before i decided i was happiest with the current incarnation. i even went so far as breaking my computer in the process by tinkering with .dll files in my windows directory, but i have to admit that fixing it was a fun process akin to solving a difficult puzzle. and now that this task is complete it’s on to bigger and better things: finishing my halloween costume!

i’ve been making huge changes to my music library recently. first off, i’ve finally said my final goodbyes to the shitty bloatware that is itunes. i’ve started using musicbee instead, a program that i’m pretty much in love with at the moment.

for one it supports flac, which i had a lot of but had to previously use vlc for. another fantastic feature is that it automatically scrobbles tracks to last.fm without any additional plugins, which brings me to my next point: i love scrobbling! i really wish i had started it sooner. for the uninitiated scrobbling simply means keeping a history of all the music you listen to. my last.fm acct is here, and one of the main reasons i started doing this is so that in the near future i can make a badass music history chart. if you haven’t started scrobbling you should, all the cool kids are doing it. and if you have started then you should add me.

since i’ve migrated to a new music platform i decided that it was finally time to organize my music library. i started about a week ago and i’m currently up to the letter “i” by which i mean adding art work, tagging every song and album appropriately, and deleting/downloading pieces of my collection so that is makes sense. i’ve got a lot of work ahead of me but it’ll be perfect when it’s finished. shouldn’t take more than a few more weeks. let’s hope i can find time to work on my video during as well…

544 images later, i’m finally done editing my still photographs. god damn that took forever. i’m only about halfway done at this point, but now the fun begins: video editing! i’m hoping to start this soon but we’ll see how much progress i make since the fam is coming into town this weekend. there will be much halo and much rejoicing.

the fam is going out of town tomorrow. i was super stoked to go but alas I could not get the time off. instead i will be doing the next best thing: working on my next video. this is a small preview. i took 750 photos that i will be editing and animating in the coming weeks. finally made use of that damn green screen.
