For whatever reason, in the past few months I’ve developed an unhealthy obsession with cell phones. I believe the main reason for this is that my phone sucks terribly, and I’m constantly in search of the “perfect phone.” I don’t think this phone exists yet, but I think there will be some serious contenders this year. And please, don’t even mention the iPhone. While I do realize how acclaimed it is and all the features it has, it still has some major flaws. It sucks that it can’t do some of the most basic of phone functions (copy and paste? really?), but the killer for me is that everyone and their dog has it and only more and more people are getting it. It is the new RAZR, and that is not OK with me. While perusing through my phone blog bookmarks, I’ve taken note of a few phones that have huge blips on my radar at the moment. Here are a few of them.
Blackberry Curve 8900

Pros: Sexy as hell, full QWERTY, best e-mail client, available now on T-mobile
Cons: No 3G, so-so browser
I have had my eye on this phone for a while, and while I’ve never owned a blackberry, I’ve always been intrigued with the idea. This particular blackberry is definitely the sexiest model yet. As far as hardware goes, this one is pretty much flawless. It does suck that it doesn’t have 3G capabilities, but the addition of wi-fi makes that a little easier to swallow. And as of today, this phone is available first to all T-Mobile customers. Pretty tantalizing if I do say so.
HTC Touch Pro

Pros: Full sliding QWERTY, decent touchscreen, relatively good design
Cons: Expensive, a bit thick, no headphone jack, not on T-Mobile
This phone was under wraps for the longest time, and it was finally released last year to all major carriers except T-Mobile. Thanks. I don’t know why T-Mobile almost always gets shafted when it comes to fancy phones. I really like the design of this phone, even if it is a little on the chunky size. Truth be told, if this is what the G1 looked like, I would have jumped on it in a heartbeat. Besides its looks, the Touch Pro has some good software, and it is one of the first handsets to be able to run the beta of Mozilla’s mobile browser. Neat.
Samsung Acme

Pros: Symbian OS, HDMI out, 8MP camera with a good lens
Cons: Not much is known at this point. More soon hopefully.
This phone isn’t even officially confirmed, but the leaks are pretty juicy. The specs are insane for a Samsung, and if it’s 3G that’s just icing on the cake. It features an 8 megapixel camera with a lens that looks like it can actually accommodate such a large sensor. No word on release date, pricing, or carrier yet. Here’s hoping it doesn’t stay under wraps for too much longer.
Toshiba TG01

Pros: Fastest cell phone processor EVER, nice UI, HUGE screen, super thin
Cons: Still using Windows Mobile, not much is known at this point
Featuring Toshiba’s crazy fast “Snapdragon” processor, this handset is shaping up to be one sweet smartphone. Like the Samsung Acme, not much is known yet as there is no official word, but preliminary details are awesome. While it is still running Windows Mobile, the UI overlay is a nice touch. More info should be released soon.
There are still a few more phones on my radar that are not on this list. The annual Mobile World Congress is actually going to be taking place this coming Monday in Barcelona, so the fuzzy details on some of these phones should become clearer, while new details will likely be flowing like milk and honey on some of the hottest phones to come out this year. I’ll be sure to post the highlights of MWC 2009, as well as my inevitable phone purchase of 2009.
